Man, I just don’t know with this anime.

It has some really interesting themes and characters, but it isn’t grabbing me as much as I would like it to. The art and animation, while pretty unique, definitely looks rough around the edges and invokes a lower ceiling for this anime given how off some movements look.

Cap’s ramblings on the Monkey League was important for the themes and a lot of characters, but I’d be lying if I said that it was a bit difficult to follow given all the abstract characters and narratives.

I think the decision to not have an OST is hurting this anime too because it can make the episodes feel long-winded and longer than they actually are.

My love for Mizuho continues to grow more and more each week. God when she was heckling with that grass in her mouth I was laughing so hard.

Pretty deep episode though. Ace and his GF are clowns. Can't stand those idiots.

And out comes big BOOBA sensei taking away all the fun and games. Yeah we'll see how that goes.

Oh yes, another strange other worldy adventure and its unique rule. This time its about baseball, and, monkey. Nagara past when he's about to played some baseball game, interacted with the others, the Cap, and those prodigy Ace. Well, as expected, its showing off once more Nagara's warping ability again. But that Ace dude really misinterpreting it so much by using the wager as a condition to forced Nagara returning them into their own world.

Its not enough to wager the rule of the world itself. Its like Nagara said before, it wasn't the Umpire that got killed. The baseball itself, the world, which means everything that back to the zero again. No lights, no home for you. The hopes of the crowd, those kids, had no bearing on that game. As the result, something changed again, and someone they never expect before entering their world. The Ace snarled, and her girl couldn't do anything. But some other dude already knew its coming, noticed at Hoshi saying it clear; someone will eventually show up.

Saving you all? More like she's threatening all of you....

A search confirms that the blond girl is indeed speaking a form of Shanghainese, albeit even Shanghai natives probably can't understand her words on a first watch. This is the second show of the season to use this dialect, the other being Love Live! Superstar!!

Honestly not sure what's going on with this trend, or if it even is a trend in the first place.

I am really trying hard to like this show. I think it has potential. I just wish it didn't always resort to being artsy and abstract.

That's my opinion of this episode and the show up to this point. Maybe the teacher character is what we need to solidify this show, but right now, I just feel like it's all over the place.

Just gonna come out and say it, Blue Monkey was robbed. His mess-up was only because of outside influences out of everyone's control. He should have gotten a do-over. The crowd's wants aside, the umpire was too up his own ass to see that there was outside interference that messed up their sacred game, not Blue Monkey's actions. He wasn't honoring the spirit of baseball, he was just being difficult.

well its not a new character. they mentioned her name in ep1

But it’s her first appearance, so she definitely is a new character.

"What got killed was baseball" - Nagara

This is what happens when you follow the narratives and support them even when they're unjust. You blindly turn your head from the rules which make the game was it is and kill it to create something else.

At the beginning of the episode, we had our most important dialogue thus far in the series. It's foreboding not only what will happen this episode, but later in the series as well.

"Still, the world really is not fair, is it? There's someone on this island who doesn't need to compensate the others." - Student Council female

"There are definitely those in the world who are chosen to get special treatment" - Scientist

"How is the plan coming along?" - Student Council male

"Yeah... the pieces are starting to come together, but there are still some key elements that are just not clear." - Scientist

"It'll be fine. Someone will eventually show up... to save us" - Student Council boy

Despite not having all the data, Hizomi says it's fine--which I'm interpreting as will go follow the "plan" regardless of the uncertainty.

This. The way the camera lingers on both their faces when the other says something (first Star Boy then Science Boy) makes you wonder.

Probably the worst episode so far. I dont even think it was that bad, it was just... kinda boring sometimes. The monkey league stuff was info dumped to us for wayyyyyyy too long. The worst part is that you dont even know if you should care or remember this information because you arent sure if its even that important (even if it helps to convey the whole message of the episode it still doesnt mean it was necessary to the overall plot). The best part of the episode was honestly the characters. Nagara is developing into a more sure of himself man. Cap was such a great dude this episode, him just showing his passion for baseball was great. And Ace is becoming a really interesting character, loved how Shanhai helped him when he was mad even though he still won, it shows how well they know each other. Sensei is very big plus too.

Mind if i ask what you mean by the off movements? Because i personally dont see them tbh.
And about the ost, i think it has its positives and negatives, first, like you said, it does feel that some episodes feel way longer that they really have to be. On the other way, i really feel that, when the ost does drop, it makes it that there is a way more powerful scene because of the lack of it in the rest of the episode.

A lot went on in an episode that seemed like not much happened in it at all.

That monkey story seemed rather insignificant until you pay attention to the character's reaction to it.

Fairy Pixie Girl: Outrage and rebellion

Yankee Girl: Sad reservation

Baseball Captain: Matter-of-factness (seems he saw it all go down)

Guy With Sweet Water Power and Blonde Girlfriend: That's the way the world should be (turns out he gave them baseball...more than one power?)

Main Character: Indifference and powerlessness

Also I'm sure there's some significance in the fact that some characters could see the monkeys while some couldn't. I'm thinking the connection that the "Can-See" group shared is...baseball, hence why the Main Character gets flashes of visions of the primates.

Finally, this episode, to me, proves that Fairy Pixie Girl's...um Fairy Pixie Girl personality conceals keen insight.

The way she looks at the Main Character, as well as other characters (in previous episodes) implies she sees past facades. Also how she stops the Main Character Love Rival from breaking Main Character's fall over the cliff at the start of the episode.

Also Oppai Sensei shows up at the end.

I promise I'll do better with supplying actual character names the next time I post as this was posted in a frenzy.

Looking forward to looking back (wow) once the show ends and piecing all the foreshadowing together.

Reject monke, return to big booba fanservice.

On a side note, this show's storytelling still feels all over the place. It's like a half-baked mystery that looks good even though it is half-baked. We know that the boy with the starmark is up to something big, but we're only really shown a few shots and a few dialogue that suggest he is up to something.

I wouldn't say the show's metaphors and social critique are superficial, but they definitely could have been presented better.

Monke Baseball.

That monkey baseball story though holy shit, Cap was talking nonstop lmao. Was weirdly immersed in that story, Cap's voice was annoying in a good way I guess, but you can definitely feel the enthusiasm when he was telling the story. But ngl, it was mad overwhelming and most of the info went over my head, but thanks to some people that explained here, I managed to understand what it was about as well.

There were a lot of close up shots of Nozomi this episode, kinda sus. Mizuho is great and entertaining as always though. Mizuho's cat's face when she said she wanted a pet monkey lmao. People shitting on Nagara kinda pisses me off, give the guy some slack. Pretty interesting that he has no control of his warping, I wonder if he will be able to control it eventually, or maybe he is lying, you never know from this show, but from what I can tell, he seems pretty genuine.

My brain instantly went to monke mode though the moment Aki-sensei appeared lmao. The boobas are nice and all but the glasses is where it's at. Looking forward to what kind of role she'll play in the coming episodes.

Some of the lip synching comes to mind when I think of "off animation", Cap swinging the bat in ep 1 and him eating in this episode also looked off. Pretty much whenever the animation doesn't match the sound effects. Sometimes the animation in this anime looks really good, other times it is noticeably off.

Yeah using the OST sparsely can have that effect, but I think it's a net loss when it makes the episode feel like it is dragging on.

I think there are a lot of people confused on what they meant by killing baseball. It's likely due to a lack of obsessive sport fandom in the anime community. They do not mean that the game is gone or that people stopped playing—they're saying that when you change rules for certain players that the game for those certain players is NOT baseball.

As you can tell, Ace and Cap are still very into baseball. The rules didn't differ for Cap, like they did for Ace. Maybe it'll be easier if people thought of this as Ace being the teacher's pet and Cap being the normal student. The teacher's pet can get away with going outside confines of an assignment, while a normal student is bound to the rigid rules of the assignment. A side effect of such treatment towards the teacher's pet makes them arrogant, God-like. By going outside the confines of the assignment means they've created their own assignment essentially. Hence why Ace feels he gave the rules to the monkeys because he was playing a different game.

---

A little more background on baseball to better understand this episode.

In baseball a perfect game is when a pitcher doesn't let any opposing player on base.

Not only was Ace about to throw a perfect game, he had thrown ALL strikes (which has never been done in the history of baseball). This means the game should end on the 81st pitch. 9 pitches per inning. 9 innings in a game.

Ace's team was up by a lot. The only reason to watch the game at this point was to see if Ace could pitch a perfect game.

The fact he threw four balls in the same place shows how arrogant he was. He wanted the umpire to bend the rules for him. When the narrative of the game is reduced down to a single pitch, there's the pressure to succumb to the mob.

To be fair, there are two different stories being juxtaposed and you seem to be treating them as perfectly equal, but they're not. Ace did not throw a semi-perfect game that was ruined by a world-shift and a one-armed Umpire. That was a monkey.

What matters is which characters and themes of the story the characters focus on. Ace idolizes Blue, Nozomi thinks the Umpire is heroic. Nagara decides that the story is about how the conflict in the story makes the sport meaningless and "kills" it, because that's what it means to him.

It's very funny that Nozomi thinks the Umpire is heroic, since she has seemed to be against the rules at every turn and the Umpire in the monkey story sacrificed itself to uphold the rules at all costs. It suggests to me that Nozomi is not some principled agent standing up against absurd rules, but just a contrarian: if some authority (the student council, notably in ep.1, or the mob and its authority-by-force, in the monkey story) is for something, she will be against it. I think.
I expect she will throw a fit when the teacher tries to end "the fun and games" the students have been enjoying up to now.

The story is easier to digest if you consider Ace as Blue. But you've convinced me that the story wasn't about Cap at all though.

I disagree with the Nagara thinking the game was meaningless still. As I laid out, he's feeling that if certain players aren't playing within the rules, they're altering the game.

The episode seems very long with the lack of OST and Cap's Monkey Story. I can completely understand how people found this episode dull and uninteresting. The story could easily be compressed -- maybe animating the monkey story could help. It's a pretty brave directing choice which is somewhat refreshing.

This episode is more of a parable. If you dig a little bit deeper, you can find the fun in the hidden meanings. Like how the blue monkey pitcher thought that the world owes him the perfect game, so he resorted to trying to bend the rules because of an event that was out of his control. He could have just been content with a near perfect game and season, he would have won anyway, but he threw the ball on the same spot in a tantrum and killed the umpire that was just enforcing the rules.

Though that said, I'm starting to think that our main boy is our unknowing god and the world is an allegory of his high school life.

I don't know why people are asking where is the story -- the story is there, its developing but you just have to look for it. Though I do bear the same fear that this buildup is all for nothing ala Wonder Egg. But we'll see.

The only thing I learned from this episode is that I hate that Ace guy. I really don't care for baseball, or any sports for that matter, so I was hoping this series would treat it a little less at face value. But, it was just an episode about real-world baseball.

I hope the appearance of their teacher is going to get some of these more arrogant characters to go somewhere and stop. Or, even better, maybe there will be more danger involved in this "survival" story now. So far most of their conflict has just been someone being upset about something someone else has or supposedly did. Just teenage drama. As far as I'm concerned, they've all been living it up pretty nice on this vacation from their homeworld.

I really enjoy how this anime manages to explore social and philosophical subjects in such a realistic and metaphorical manner.

The whole thing is themed around the 'dreams against expectations' topic I think. We'll see if Nagara finds some motivation and a dream/goal to aspire to. I can relate with him.
